"Sabai-dii" or "Hello, pen" is what you hear often. Especially from children. After some time we were not really sure they know exactly what a pen is, but I guess it sounded good to them. We tried to buy them some pens from a local shop but, a shop clerk was too confused when we wanted 10 of them. So we bought them shampoo instead of pens. They were so dirty, we guessed they will need it. Children are a highlight of every trip. This time to northern Laos.
